When you activated Vanquish, sender confirmations were enabled by default (the confirmation was previously called a "challenge"). You can suppress this feature from your Preference page.

If you disable sender confirmations, another setting allows you to supress all feedback to the sender. That is, you may wish to let them know that their message was not delivered, so that legitimate senders can find another way to contact you, or you may prefer to avoid any indication that you email address is valid.

Most users allow the sender confirmation, because it faithfuly distinguishes individual senders from senders of bulk mail. Although some bulk mail is undesrirable, recipients rarely find messages undesirable are it is rare that mail sent on the small scale with which the sender can respond to challenges.
