| --VQ-- wrote: | In the past, some small offices chose vqME instead of vqNow. vqME is a personal antispam service intended for individuals and families. Since it protects up to 5 addresses and can send mail into separate spam free mailboxes, it's tempting to use it for a workgroup. But with vqME, users share their password, preferences, Allow/Block lists and even their Confirmation ID. Additionally, it is subject to personal limits on overall email traffic and is not compatible with Exchange and other custom "groupware" services. [More about differences]
If you use just a few addresses and none are a domain "catchall"), there is a new reason to choose vqNow, the premier business platform. Now you can get it at a steep discount. At the time of this announcement, a 5 user mini-workgroup account it is only $100 plus a 1 time setup of $50. That's on par with 2 vqME accounts, but with lots of nifty extras for people who own their own domain.
If you take us up on this offer (and why wouldn't you?), note that your vqNow account must be to be programmed with all addresses on your domain. That's because a special feature blocks dictionary attacks by refusing connections from any server that has an incorrect or unlisted delivery address. Even though you must register all addresses, you can selectively disable spam filtering on some of your addresses. Inactive addresses are assessed against your address limit or included as a low cost option. |
You have just asked me to upgrade from vqME to vNOW because of overwhelming traffic volumes (spam) to my personal domain which is redirected to my vqME account together with email for domains for each member of the family.
As you are aware from both the configuration of my vqME account and past email discussions as well as posts on this forum, I make a lot of use of what you call catchall addresses. Thus, any forum I join, I normally join using the name forumname@mydomain.co.uk and similarly any ecommerce provider I use I normal give the email address of shopname@mydomain.co.uk for contact details - I must have over a hundred such catchall addresses. The catchalls general have very low email volumes. All of these catchall addresses are listed on the allow lists (as list-server entries).
In response to your email today asking me to upgrade to vqNOW, I paid for an account immediately in my usual demonstration of good faith (I do like your service). Since, I have come to the forum to have a look around and see what is going on. I then read the above (I should have done more reading beforehand). As I read this, it suggests to me that vqNOW is NOT suitable for someone with their own personal domain using a lot of catchall addresses.
This leaves me in a bit of a fix. I cannot use vqME because the spam volumes are too high. I cannot use vqNOW because I would have to register over 100 catchall addresses as if actual users and this would be extremely expensive. Perhaps I misunderstand and I can just provide all those catchall addresses from the allow list of list-server entries?
HELP??!!

It seems there was some confusion over terminology on my part. Catchall is simple the destination account one aliases to receive email that otherwise fails to match any accounts.
There is no "catchall" address by definition of course.
The ad hoc addresses I define do not have accounts associated with them therefore they will be caught by the catchall arrangements.
For my domain, as it is personal and not a business and hence all comes to me I have NO addresses defined at all and hence everything falls into the catchall trap.
This is now being setup on vqNOW.

All resolved now, I did not need to upgrade to vqNOW afterall although may well still do so at some point.
For some reason, my account was popping email from the source servers again even though all mail for my domains is forwarded to vqME.com. Perhaps one slipped through the net or on a recovery some time this was turned on again by accident. Also, there was one very odd profile address that I would not have created that was trying to pop from another profile address! Whatever the cause, it is all history...
The Vanquish team came through again and re-created my accounts from scratch, keep all lists (subects, allows, blocks, etc) and everything works well.
Obviously it would have been better if the problem could have been identified earlier but some things always mystify us even when they seem obvious with hindsight. No doubt the team has learnt something that will benefit others.
Thanks to the team.

Thanks for the updates, Stuart. Indeed, we learn a little each time we diagnose and correct a problem. Our senior engineer has just developed a tool to more rapidly determine if an account exhibits any of the oddities that were affecting your original account.
When we have a bit more time, we will be more proactive by implementing at least the first item below (To deal with legacy accounts, we may need to do both):- prevent a settings conflict at the time of configuration (entry parsing) - or at least...
- create an agent that periodically sweeps through the user accounts looking for conflicts and illegal entries.
Finally, we are creating a tool that will inform us of any particular account that is suddenly using an unusual level of resources or alternatively has recently begun a dramatic increase in resource consumption. This will help us to quickly determine if a new problem is brewing - perhaps long before it becomes a problem for our customer. |
