|
|
Occasionally, our technical support staff will ask for the full headers of an email message that you received. This helps us to diagnose a problem that you have reported. For example, if mail is delayed before appearing in your IN box, the headers tell us where the problem occurred.
When we ask for the headers, we don't just want the From/To/Date/Subject. Instead we need the complete routing information for the message which is normally hidden. To find this data, open the email in its own window by double clicking on the index. Don't simply view it in a preview pane. Then follow the directions for your own email program in the list below.
1. Find the Full Headers (just 2 or 3 clicks!)- Live Mail or Outlook Express: Open message in its own window. Click File » Properties » Details tab
- Outlook 2010 (Windows 7): Open message. Click File » Properties. Headers are at bottom of window.
- Outlook 2007 (Vista): Open message. On Message tab, click arrow next to Options (bottom edge of ribbon).
- Outlook (earlier versions): Open message in its own window. Click View » Options
- vqME Webmail: Open message. Click View Full Header. the link is just above the email text
Other Programs- Apple Mail: (See also MAC Mail, below). Click View » Message » Long Headers
- AOL: Open email. Just above main body, click Detail.
- Gmail: Open email. On right, click drop down arrow next to Reply. Then click Show Original.
- Entourage: Open message in its own window. Click View » Internet Headers
- Eudora: Open message in its own window. Click "Blah Blah" button at top of message window
- Incredimail: From IN Box, right-click message - or with message open, click File. Then left-click Properties » Details tab
- MAC Mail [OS X]: Click Mail » Preferences » Viewing » Show Header Detail: ALL
- Pegasus: Open message in its own window. Click the tab Raw View
- Thunderbird: Open message in its own window. Click View » Headers » All
- Yahoo: Open message in its own window. Click Actions button at top » View Full Header.
2. Copy, Paste and Send:
Left-click and drag your mouse over the header until all lines are highlited. Press CTRL-C to copy them (nothing happens). Click the link for your existing support ticket or open a new one if you have not yet initiated one. Click in the entry area for new text and then press CTRL-V. This will paste the headers into the support ticket. Fill in the other information and click Submit.
Never include the email itself - only the headers. And please do not paste these lines into an email. The support ticket helps us to see the history of an inquiry and collaborate internally to address your issue.

I noted that the directions for Mac OS X's Mail program is missing:
Directions for Apple Mail:
If you want to see the routing information and complete headers for a message, choose View > Message > Long Headers. _________________ jmo |
