This tip is for vqNow users. If you use vqME, click here.

Problem
When you do business with strangers through a trusted intermediary (like eBay or PayPal), you don't know the address from which mail will arrive, becuase it may come from a stranger, or various departments within the orgnization. This is also problem when giving out your email address in any public gathering, such as an audience listening to you speak.

You might think that SmartSubject could help in these cases, but you cannot ensure that the subject of future mailings will match. Also, your audience won't remember the instructions.

You could add the entire service to your Domain Allow List (for example, Ebay.com or PayPal.com). But this does not solve the problem! First, it won't admit mail that arrives with the address of the bidder or payor and second, spammers know that people white-list these companies. By forging their FROM address to match the site that you trust, they slip past conventional spam filters.

Solution: The List-Serve List
Legitimate vendors (banks, airlines, eBay, etc) do not give your address to their entire community. So you can register a special "trusted" address with them. If a transaction requires clients to communicate with each other (for example, eBay bidding or PayPal transactions), it is accomplished with a web form. This hides your email address from the other visitor until a transaction is underway. That is, until trust has been established with the other member.

It's easy to avoid phishing scams when dealing with a trusted party, even if you don't knw the various addresses from which they send mail. Simply give them an address that a scam artist wouldn't know and then add the address to your LIST-ALLOW list. The List-Allow feature admits mail based on the TO address rather than the FROM address, so you don't have to know the senders exact address and you don't have to whitelist the whole domain. No filters, no bonds, no challenges, no delays!

How Its Done:
  • Create a custom address on your mail server. Make it an alias of your regular address, or deliver it to the same recipients.
  • Add the same address to your vqNow account as an alias
  • Place it on your vqNow List Allow list. Be sure that your trusted vendor has recorded this address and not your regular address
If you are not certain that a vendor can be trusted to keep your address private, make a special address just for that one company. For example: Newsweek-Subscriber@yourdomain.com. That way, if it ever becomes "polluted", you can remove it from your List-Allow list. This same technique works if you wish to announce your email address to a large group at an important meeting or if you guaranteed delivery of mail from your own online web form. Just as with your bank, you don't know the individual addresses that various senders will use. Even if you did, it would be difficult to add every every sender to your Allow list and then maintain their future address changes.

Antoher nifty thing about this is that when you reply to the letters from these new contacts, vqNow adds their individual addresses to your Allow List. So even if you retire the special "event" address, mail from your contacts will never be filtered or challenged!
