Can I use my Juno address with vqME? Asked by Gary Hapanovich
That depends... According to this bulletin: | Quote: | | "To take advantage of offline email clients such as Microsoft Outlook, you must upgrade to a Platinum or Turbo account." |
If you already have one of these deluxe accounts, this same bulletin provides tips for configuring popular email programs like Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Eudora.
Background
To work with your current address, the ISP or email service that hosts it must allow either POP Access or Email Forwarding. Both are email standards - and both are supported by nearly every ISP in the galaxy, including all cable companies, DSL providers, Earthlink, and most email services, including gmail.
But the free versions of Hotmail and Yahoo derive their revenue based on your visits to their web sites or your use of their proprietary mail-retrieval method. These services demand that you upgrade your account before using POP or forward.
Why Would My Email Provider Block POP Access?
There are two possible answers - and usually you can tell which one applies by closely inspecting the provider's Privacy Policy. Either:- They want the right to push advertising at you (through the email program or on webmail screens)
- -or- they want to collect and sell information about the people you correspond with and the content of your mail.
As alarming as this sounds, the folks at gMail freely acknowledge that this is the price of "Free" mail. It helps them to better target you with commercial messages, even if you never realize those messages are related to your personal email habits. Their analysis of your email actually influences the personal relevance of ads that you see when you are surfing the web.
For some, this is scary stuff! -But for others, it is a reasonable bargain and one that may enhance their time and focus. |
