Unlike vqME, vqNow and vqSA users retrieve mail from their own server, ISP or hosted service. So there is no need to change the incoming settings of every user's email program. But outgoing mail must be routed through the security server [Tell me Why?].- If you use a dedicated mail server, users needn't change their email program settings, but we must add the server address to our trusted IP list. Users send into your server and you redirect outgoing mail to vqNow. [MS Exchange tips]. But if your mail is hosted by a service with many domains on a shared server, then you cannot use this technique.
- If you use a shared hosting service, you or your individual users must configure their email programs to send mail through our SMTP server. These settings are typically under Tools » Email Accounts -or- Tools » Options » Accounts. Look for a tab or button marked More Settings or Advanced.
| Code: | Outgoing/SMTP server mail.vqme.net
User Name or Login full email address
Password Vanquish password
SMTP Port 587
Server requires authentication (also Yes: Select this
called “Use password when sending”)
Secure Passwords, SSL or StartTLS Not required * |
* If your organization requires SSL, confguration is at bottom of this page.

Our group of about 7 users use vqNow, but we each use different software (some use Outlook and some use Outlook Express) to view and manage our e-mail. Should we all be changing our SMTP ports from 25 to 587 in our various software programs?
I guess I'm not sure whether our virtual private server is a dedicated mail server or a shared hosting service... |

Hi Pili-Law.
Smaller companies (fewer than 100 addresses), typically use shared mail servers. Dedicated servers are either shipped to a data center by you - or are rented for $50-200 dollars per month instead of $2-25 per month for email addresses. Dedicated servers have a user control that includes very high level functionality such as taking it offline or rebooting the box.Companies that own or rent a dedicated server , typically fit one of these descriptions (not always; it's only a rule of thumb):- more than 100 employees and a full time IT person
- reselling email service to others
- a compelling need to own their own server at a data center (banks & law firms)
As far as your vqNow account is concerned, the advantage of having a dedicated server is that you can avoid having each user change their email program settings. Instead, you just have the server route the mail in the desired manner. But since you have only 7 users, this is not a concern. Both Outlook or Outlook Express require the same change to email server settings (both are on the tab "More Setting". The configuration change is simple and quick. Just follow the recommendation at the top of this page. Related topic: |
